CP Fraga reach the WSE Champions League Women’s final after a penalty shoot-out

Two great teams, both with clear ambitions to reach the final, but it was CP Fraga who secured their place against Benfica, this Sunday at 12:00 in Coimbra. It took extra time and a penalty shoot-out to decide the winner after the score was 1-1 at the end of 60 minutes. In the decisive spot-kicks, CP Fraga scored twice and CP Vila-Sana just once.

Match report
A very intense first half, with both teams sharing the attacking moments and dominance of possession, bringing pace and excitement to the match. With several chances at both ends, the first half was nevertheless lacking in goals, which highlighted the work of the goalkeepers. It was down to Adriana Soto’s goal for CP Fraga, who caught the opposition defence off guard with a powerful shot. Fraga could have extended their lead, but Vinyet Flix failed to beat Anna Salvat.
The intensity continued after the break, with Vila-Sana pressing in search of an equaliser. It came through Luciana Agudo’s goal, tapping into an empty net following Aina Florenza’s work. It was clear then that it would be a closely fought game until the end, decided by the finer details. But the match ended without further goals, forcing extra time and decision with penalty shoot-out, where CP Fraga threw the party.
What they said:
Lluis Rodero, Vila-Sana coach
“We didn’t start the game well; they were a bit hasty, especially in the first half when we weren’t at our best. Then we had a very good second half and extra time, but the ball just wouldn’t go in, and when that happens and we go to penalties… We created plenty of chances, but we couldn’t go through. We’re working well; they deserved to reach the final. It’s tough, but we have to work hard to be in good shape for the Queen’s Cup and we have to keep moving forward, learn from our mistakes and keep improving.”
Jordí Capdevilla, CP Fraga coach
“Very happy; we knew the standard of Vila-Sana and that it would be a very difficult, tough, tight game that could be decided by a single detail, so we’d have to dig deep and support one another. So, of course, we’re very happy with the win. Now we’re in the final; we’ll face Benfica, a team with a lot of quality, but we know what we have to do: stay alert and watch out for Benfica’s strengths. I think it could be a very similar match to today’s, especially defensively; these are games where there are no favourites. We’ll recover well and try to compete as best we can.”
