The first day of the first Under 17 Women European Championship immediately gave great balance between the first four contenders. England’s comeback tie against Portugal is an important result: Helder Antunes’ Portuguese side took the lead up to 3-1 with goals from Silva, Moreira and Teixeira, but the English team, led by Courtenay-Barrow (two goals) kept up the pace and put their opponents in difficulty by mending the result, reaching a draw six minutes from the end with the penalty shot scored by Chandler. The 3-3 trie rewards the will of the English (Portugal won 2-0 on direct shots after the draw). Again in the second match, Italy took the lead 3-1, with the first goals from Bertinato, Rubega and Floriani in the first half. Even Reinert’s Germans never stopped believing in it but Italy managed on a penalty shot to make it 4-1 and then concluding on the result of 5-2, thus going to the top of the qualifying group with 3 points. The second round Italy will try to stay in the top against France but it will be very interesting also England versus Germany, two team who have done very well today.
