Miguel Rocha’s ‘manita’ leads OC Barcelos to the semi-finals in Coimbra

A fine rink hockey match in the final game of the WSE Champions League by Azemad quarter-finals. The scoreline might give the false impression of a one-sided, one-way game, but OC Barcelos and Hockey Trissino put on a great show, with the Italians proving worthy opponents, never giving up the fight. But a truly outstanding night for Miguel Rocha (five goals!) took the Minho side through to the next round, where they will face FC Porto.

A very intense match demanding pace right from the start, with OC Barcelos and Trissino both looking to make their mark. The contest was decided early on, with the Minho side benefiting from a power play after just 3 minutes. That was how Carlitos put his team ahead, following a well-placed shot by the Portuguese international.
Trissino reacted; they were also playing good hockey and shortly afterwards João Almeida levelled the score, also from a well-worked move that left Torrents with no chance. The match lost neither intensity nor pace, but it became clear that it was OC Barcelos who were showing the greatest discipline on the ice, and the goals began to flow. Top scorer Miguel Rocha also made his mark, breaking the deadlock with a powerful shot that left Zampoli with no chance, and scoring again shortly afterwards with a well-worked goal from the front zone.
The Italians refused to give up and spared no effort in creating attacking moves that posed a serious threat to the Minho side’s penalty area. Even so, the score remained unchanged until half-time.
After the break, Trissino came out determined to make life difficult for Barcelos… but it was Miguel Rocha’s night and, just as he had done in the first half, he quickly added two more goals: the 4-1 from a subtle deflection off a shot by Ivan Morales, and the 5-1 from another powerful, angled shot that left the keeper with no chance. The game was practically over, but the team managed by the Portuguese João Pinto refused to give up and pulled one back to make it 5-2, courtesy of a follow-up from Jordi Méndez.
Miguel Rocha was unstoppable and the match would not end without another goal from the Portuguese international, who completed his hat-trick by finishing off an excellent attacking move led by Ivan Morales, sealing the rout and securing qualification for the semi-finals.

What they said:
Rui Neto, OC Barcelos coach
“The result is lopsided compared to the game itself; it doesn’t really reflect what the match was like. We scored at key moments and were stronger and more experienced when it came to finishing. They created chances, but overall the result is entirely fair. We’re in the role of underdogs and we’ll stay that way, but as long as we have the strength, we’ll give it our all to reclaim the title. In the semi-finals we’ll face a great team of undeniable quality; we’ll hold on to the quality we have to try and reach the final.”
João Pinto, Hockey Trissino coach
“We didn’t perform to our usual standard; we’re a team capable of more. Congratulations to Barcelos – they’re a strong side – but I don’t think the scoreline reflects the game as it was played. We wanted to see the match through to the end, because we know we have the ability to do so. We’re here to gain experience and we hope to return here in the future.”
