From 1 to 13 September, the Rota dos Móveis Pavilion in Lordelo will once again be home to the best rink hockey on the continent. The WSE European Championships – Paredes 2025 brings eight men's and eight women's teams to Paredes, ready to fight for the title and offer great spectacle, excitement and great sporting moments.
Portugal, Spain, Italy and France are in Group A, while Switzerland, Germany, Andorra and Austria make up Group B, which will compete for the men's trophy from 1 to 6 September. The group stage will lead to the knockout rounds on the 4th and 5th, culminating in the final scheduled for 6 September at 9:15 p.m.
The expectation is for a full pavilion, with intense games, decided in the details and charged with passion. The Portuguese public, known for their enthusiasm and connection to the sport, promises to add even more colour to a competition that reinforces Portugal's status as a world reference in rink hockey.
The European rink hockey Championship, which had its first edition in 1926, has been dominated by the national teams of Portugal and Spain, countering the initial English hegemony, which won the first 12 editions, until Portugal broke that cycle by winning four consecutive European championships (1947, 1948, 1949 and 1950).
The Portuguese team is the most successful, with 21 trophies, maintaining the tradition of a country where rink hockey is almost considered cultural heritage. Spain follows closely behind with 19 wins, having been the most consistent team in recent decades, winning ten of the last 12 editions. Only Italy (2014) and Portugal (2016) have broken the cycle in this period. England is the third most successful country (12), despite the fact that its last European Championship was won in 1939… The list of European champions is completed by three titles won by the Italian national team.
Benefiting from shared logistics, the party continues between 8 and 13 September, with the women's teams taking to the same stage, ensuring another week of elite hockey with the best teams on the continent: Portugal, Spain, France and Italy are in Group A; England, Switzerland, Germany and the Netherlands are in Group B.
This is already the 17th edition of the women's competition and the fifth time that the continental tournament has been held on Portuguese soil (São João da Madeira, Mira, Mealhada and Luso).
Spain is the dominant force, with eight titles (1995, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015, 2018, 2021, 2023), including seven consecutive titles until 2023.
In the medal table, Portugal follows with three trophies (1997, 1999, 2001); Italy with two (1991, 1993); Germany (2003, 2007); and France (2005).
