Seeding Process and Nations Ranking

Seeding process

For all the categories, the serpentine method is used

In order to apply the serpentine, a ranking must be applied. On that basis, WSE ILH commission took advice, on June 16th, with World Skate Sports Department. Based on the exchanges, Sports Department advises that if an international ranking exists, it is better to use it as a basis to rank the teams. On June 19th, we have asked WS IHTC to provide the international rankings in place.

We receive from WS IHTC, on July 8th, the International ranking system in place and updated for the Senior Men at the date of October 2022. No other ranking exists at the international level.

S IHTC rankings – Senior men – October 2022

RANKING SYSTEM GENERAL FRAMEWORK FOR SENIOR WOMEN / JUNIOR MEN / JUNIOR WOMEN / U17M

The ranking is based on a per category basis. For each category, the commission has selected the competitions reflecting the most accurate sports results able to rank teams amongst each other.

Once the competitions are chosen, the ranking system works as follow.

Point System

The ranking system is based on awarding points to the teams for their final positions from the four previous years of competition. Winner is awarded 2000 points. There is then a 40-point difference between 1st and 2nd, between 2nd and 3rd, between 4th and 5th and between 8th and 9th positions. The reason for this is to award teams a bonus reaching the Quarterfinals, the Semi-finals, the Finals and for winning the Gold Medal. Between all other final ranked positions there is a 20-point difference.

To ensure that the ranking accurately reflects the current status of a nation’s playing ability, the greatest importance is given to results of the most recent year’s competition. In a decreasing fashion, recognition is also paid to results from previous years. Basically, the points earned in one year decline linearly over the next 3 years by 25% annually, where in the 5th year the results are dropped from the calculation altogether.

Example:

Season 1:100% value2000 pts
Season 2:75% value1500 pts
Season 3:50% value1000 pts
Season 4:25% value500 pts
Season 5:0% value0 pts
Points values for ranking systems over the years

Considered for this ranking are the overall points of a national team within the ranking system. The overall points are the summation of the tournament points a team has earned in the previous four years – hereby the value decline of the points over this time span is considered.

The team with the highest overall points leads the Ranking System. The other competing nations follow by descending figures.

In case teams have no points, they are ranked in alphabetical order (IHTC recommendation).
